A bit of history… One of the tributary brands in the Ralph Lauren corporation, Polo Sport was launched in 1992 as a range of active and sportswear. Always having kept sports in mind throughout the designing process, Polo Sport was a brand that allowed them to be at the forefront, simultaneously introducing a new range and nodding to the coinciding Barcelona Olympic games. The idea, as Jerry Lauren explained, of the ‘Olympics, on the street, wherever you go’ was what the initial Stadium collection was built on, seeing Naomi Campbell and Tyson Beckford posing in various sporting shots to promote the brand. Mixing high fashion with workout wear, Polo Sport’s Racer Bear embodied a new Ralph Lauren style, one that found the line between preppy and streetwear and stole the hearts and minds of the 1990s youth.
Tyson Beckford’s campaign with Polo Sport highlighted how sportswear, from swimming to basketball could be fashionable, not just under the athleisure umbrella, but within the industry in general. Since then, the logo has been embroidered on beanie hats to puffer jackets and is much-loved by all demographics.
